Do you own an inkjet printer? Bet you take it for granted every single time you print from it right? That’s ok because so does everyone else. What we forget is what life was like before inkjet printers. Actually some of you reading this probably don’t even know there was ever anything before inkjet printers. You never had to endure the ear splitting noise of dot matrix or line printers. Or suffer the bank busting costs of having to fork out for a laser printer (if you cound find one!)

Amazingly enough home inkjet printers are just coming up for their 20th birthday very soon. This probably means that inkjet printer technology is also older than some of the people reading this article which is kinda weird but kinda cool at the same time no? Canon and Hewlett Packard (HP) were the first companies to take the risk on manufacturing a home inkjet printer. HP did this with their HP Deskjet 500 model. Canon weren’t far behind them with their BJ-10 inkjet printer.

All inkjet printers create text or images by squirting tiny, tiny drops of ink onto paper. This is done hundreds and even thousands of times per second – depending on the capacity and speed of the inkjet printer itself. How each printer actually creates these tiny drops of ink is a little different.

Canon for example for years relied on their Bubblejet technology. This meant a bubble of ink was heated inside the print head and this literally forced other drops of ink to explode (a very controlled explosion) onto the paper.

Hewlett Packard took a different angle on the problem of quickly creating ink drops by using something called piezo-electric technology. This involved tiny crystals having electricity run through them and this causes them to change shape. This change in shape causes a pulse which fires the ink from the print head out onto the paper.

Inkjet printers have experienced a real boom in popularity over the last 10 years. You can’t walk into most home now without seeing an inkjet printer attached to a computer somewhere in the house. The fact that inkjet printers got so popular means that their production costs dropped because of the massive demand.

The one thing that hasn’t really come down in price over the years is the cost of the actual ink and the cartridges. They’re not as expensive as they used to be but people are still looking for the cheapest printer cartridges – every few bucks you can save these days is important right?

Does this mean that all inkjet cartridges are created equal? Heck no but there are plenty of online resources you can use to make sure you’re making the right choice in advance.
