Looking for an IT job? How to get your CV noticed!
So, you’re looking for a job in IT? Maybe you’ve already seen the ideal job online; so how do you get yourself noticed. Below is my guide to short-cuts and how to get ahead of the rest of the applicants… this worked for me. I got 12 interviews for IT Jobs in one day by employing these little secrets…
Step 1. call the person who wrote the job ad, normally you’ll see there details below the advert in the footer, failing that simply call the company and ask to speak to the person who is dealing with the Java Job or so on. Askthat person if the job is still open as you were going to send your cv. Keep it brief but do mention your name, and that you have xyz experience. Askwhen they are closing the ad. Don’t appear desperate or to over-enthusiastic. The idea is get to get your name noticed so you can increase your chances of being spotted or short-listed.
Step 2. Make sure you use a pretty nice email address. So if you’re a java expert, or know a lot about C then use a related email address. Get some extra kudos points. job advertisers laugh at peoples email addresses, sometime it gives a real insight into who you are. So if your email address is something like mad_hippy@yahoo.com or death_stalker_kill@aol.com better change it before you submit your cv.
Step 3.
Make sure you put the name of the job advertiser you spoke to on your subject header of your email and also the job reference. Simple but effective. Your application will definitely get read.
Step 4.
In your cover note , ask a question. Most applicants don’t do this , and if you can engage or start a conversation with the recruiter (providing you can show value) you will double the chance of getting an interview.
Step 5.
In your cover letter, tell them you have 1/worked for them in the past, 2/know someone that works there, 3/that you know there boss, 4/ that in some way you have a connection. It could be that you work for their competition. You are simply trying to increase interest levels. n.b. – don’t lie!!!
Step 6.
Include a picture of yourself. Always do so if you have a absoloutley amazing picture, if there is any doubt that it is mediocre don’t do this. Also make sure that it is only passport size and embedded onto your cv. Don’t over-emphasis but this can also take you to the top of the que.
Step 7.
Search on the internet and also send one other application from another jobsite or place they have advertised. Don’t’ overdo it, this can work well if you are dealing with HR departments as they will only review cv’s when they all come in rather than one at a time like many recruitment consultants
Step 8.
Hand deliver your cv. This is a killer move. 95% of all other applicants wont do this. You can also ask for the person that you know you have to apply for, this will definitely put you in the picture.
Step 9. Make sure that you submit your cv from a relevant source, so if you are applying for an IT jobs apply from a jobs , you’re going to again be seen as a person that is serious about getting a job rather than applying from a free site, or sites that have many different topics or auction websites that also offer job adverts.
Step 10. make sure you apply for fresh IT Jobs website, so if you see a job that is 29 days old. Always call the person to check you are ok to apply for it, if you don’t get an a enthusiastic “yes” move on. 95% of all job ads are only advertised for 30 days. So be wise.
